Job Summary
We are seeking highly skilled and experienced Legal Translators, Editors, and Transcribers to work on a part-time, remote basis. As a contractor with our organization, you will be responsible for translating, editing, and transcribing legal documents between English and Belarusian. Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate translation of documents and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from foreign languages into English or vice versa.
- Edit audio transcriptions that include slang and idioms.
- Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language.
- Translate and/or transcribe following the government client's style guides and quality standards.
- Use domain-specific terminology.
- Review and certify the quality of other translators' work, as needed.
- Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio.
- Abide by a code of ethics when performing transcription and translation work.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Holds active U.S. Public Trust or higher security clearance or willing to undergo a U.S. government background check to obtain a Public Trust Clearance Moderate Level.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
- At least 3 years of experience in translating and/or editing between English and the foreign language.
- At least 3 years of experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription.
- Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Translators and editors must proficiently use CAT tools, such as SDL Trados.
Preferred Qualifications
- Law degree, paralegal certificate, or documented legal translation or transcription experience.
- Experience with editing documents of audio transcriptions.
- Active Public Trust or higher security clearance.
- ATA, NAJIT, or other relevant professional certification.
Skills and Competencies
To succeed in this role, you will need to possess:
- Advanced Proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.
- Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language.
- Strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- High level of attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
