Position Overview
The Guest Special Education Teaching Assistant position is an on-call, as-needed role that requires flexibility and reliability. Under the guidance of the classroom teacher, you will assist in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs and at-risk students. Key Responsibilities
- Assist the classroom teacher in planning, preparing, and delivering instructional activities that cater to the diverse needs of students with special needs
- Provide individualized support to students, including academic assistance, behavioral guidance, and emotional support
- Help create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes social interaction, respect, and empathy among students
- Assist with the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and ensure that students receive the support and accommodations they require
- Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to develop and implement strategies that meet the unique needs of each student
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, behavior, and attendance, and communicate effectively with parents and guardians
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance your knowledge and skills in special education and stay up-to-date with best practices
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must meet one of the following licensure requirements:
- Current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL)
- Current Illinois Substitute Teaching License
- Current Illinois Educator License with Stipulations Endorsed-Paraprofessional Educator
If you do not already hold a Teaching/Substitute License, you may be eligible for a Paraprofessional Educator license if you have:
- An Associate's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution
- 60 semester hours of coursework from a regionally accredited institution
- A high school diploma or equivalent, plus a score of 480 or higher on the ETS Parapro test
- A high school diploma or equivalent, plus a score of 4 or higher on the ACT WorkKeys Applied Math and Workplace Documents
Alternatively, you may be eligible for a Current Illinois Short Term Approval (STA) - Paraprofessional if you meet the following requirements:
- Minimum age of 19 years old
- Application in ELIS ($50 application fee)
- Proof of high school graduation (copy of diploma, transcript, or GED)
Preferred Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- Experience working with special needs children or in a related field
- Ability and willingness to work at least 3 days per week
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and build strong relationships with students, teachers, and parents
- Flexibility and adaptability in responding to the changing needs of students and the classroom environment
